Frequently Asked Questions

In our Frequently Asked Questions section we try to answer some of the most commonly asked questions. If your question cannot be answered here, e-mail us your question at info@cybertext.com and we will try to answer it as best we can.

Questions (For Students)

1. My instructor has assigned a CyberText book or project. How do I begin using CyberText?

We have created help files to guide you through the process. Click on the link below for your product.

·         Help file for Building Blocks of Accounting: A Financial Perspective

·         Help file for Building Blocks of Accounting: A Managerial Perspective

·         Help file for Building Blocks of Accounting: A bbacgtax Perspective

·         Help file for Managerial Accounting for the 21st Century and Building Blocks: Managerial Perspective

2. I have a user name and password. How do I "Log in" to access the book I purchased?

Click on "LOGIN HERE" at the very right of the menu at the top of the page. Select STUDENT, then select the book you are logging on to, and finally enter your username (email) and password and click SIGN IN.

3. I had problems at the credit card processing step and never got a user name and password. However, I did get a credit card receipt via email. What do I need to do?

When your credit card is successfully processed your account is set up automatically and you are shown your user name and password on the screen. The user name and password is also sent to you via email. If you did not get a "decline" message and received an email indicating that your credit was charged, please send email to support@cybertext.com. Be sure to include your full name, university, and contact phone number. You will receive a response by phone or most likely via email within 24 hours.

4. I forgot my username and password! How can I get my user name and password?

Go to the "LOGIN HERE" link at the top right of the page. Then click on "Forget the Password?" and follow the instructions. If you do not receive your account details via email, please send email to support@cybertext.com. Be sure to include your full name, university, and contact phone number. You will receive a response by phone or most likely via email within 24 hours.

5. Can I get a hard copy of the whole book, or do I have to print out chapters individually?

Your instructor may have placed a "master copy " of the book either on reserve at your library or at a local copy center -- please check with your instructor. If that is not available, you will have to print out the chapters individually. We strongly receommend printing the PDF versions of the chapters, rather than the HTML versions. You will need to have Adobe Acrobat installed on your computer to be able to view and print out PDF files.

6. Is sharing of accounts permitted? Can two students use one account?

No! Sharing of accounts is expressly prohibited. Each student must have his/her own account on our server. You can get credit for the online quizzes only if you have your own CyberText account.

7. How long do I have access to the material I purchased?

You have access to the book/product for the duration of one semester, usually about six (6) months. You are encouraged to save the Adobe PDF files of all the chapters, which will be yours to keep forever. However, you will not be able to log on to the book/product after the end of the semester in which you bought the product for use. This term of use is in the agreement which you would have accepted at the time of account set-up.

Questions (For Instructors)

1. Can instructors review any of the e-books or practice sets offered? What is the process?

Yes! Please email us at info@cybertext.com and we will provide you with a "validation code." Use the validation code on this form to set up your free evaluation account. The account will enable you to review one or more of our on-line books or practice sets. After you review our products, if you would like to adopt our low cost online books or practice sets, please email us at info@cybertext.com.

2. One of my fellow instructors is using one of the CyberText books. How do I access the online book for my class?

When an instructor decides to adopt a book, the "account setup form" is updated to reflect the instructor, institution, and course. Using the "account setup form," you should select the correct "instructor--course--section" combination, select the correct book, and proceed to set up an account that will enable you to access the book for your class. You can pay either by credit card, on-line in secure mode, or by check. The online account setup process results in your account being set up automatically and instantly. Credit card payers can instantly access the entier book. Those who choose to pay by check obtain instant access to a subset of the book, until we actually receive their check at which time their access privileges are converted to allow them access to the entire book.

3. I am an instructor and have reviewed one of your e-books and/or practice sets. What is the process if I decide to adopt an e-book and/or practice set?

Please email support@cybertext.com with details of your university, course, section, and the book/product you would like to adopt. We will set up your course on our "account setup form" so that your students can sign up for their online accounts to access the book/product you have adopted. Students can pay either by credit card, on-line in secure mode, or by check. These payment options are explained on the "account setup form."

4. How much do the Web-based books cost students?

As of November 2019, the costs of our Web-based books are as follows: (1) Accounting Information Systems -- $59.99; (2) Advanced Systems Analysis & Design -- $39.99; (3) Building Blocks of Accounting: A Financial Perspective -- $17.99; (4) Building Blocks of Accounting: A Managerial Perspective -- $17.99; (5) Building Blocks of Accounting: A bbacgtax Perspective -- $17.99; (6) each of the 'Data Analytics' products is $14.99 individually and an additional $6.99 when bundled with a 'Building Blocks' product; and (7) Managerial Accounting for the 21st Century -- $79.99. All prices are in US dollars. These prices are for the account only, no hard copies. By way of comparison, traditional textbooks range anywhere from $150 to $250. In comparison with traditional textbooks, our Web-based books are (1) significantly more up to date, (2) provide capabilities not available with traditional printed books (links, on-line searching), and (3) include the on-line quizzing system at no extra cost.

5. Can students obtain printed copies of the books?

For two of our products (Accounting Information Systems: A Database Approach, and Advanced Systems Analysis & Design), we provide the option of ordering a hard copy during the account setup process. The hard copy of the book is delivered directly via USPS. The cost is $29.99 for the "Advanced Systems Analysis & Design" book and $49.99 for the "Accounting Information Systems: A Database Approach" book. Purchasing the hard copy is *optional* because: (1) at many institutions, printing is a "free" resource (all students pay a mandatory computer fee), (2) students may have a computer and printer at home in which case the cost of printouts would be even less than the normal copying cost of about 6 or 7 cents a page, and (3) we have found that students like being able to print out a chapter at a time and bring only one or two chapters to class (rather than having to lug around a thick book).

6. Are the books available in hard copy form only?

No! We consider ourselves primarily a "Web publisher." While printouts are necessary for reading and studying from, we feel that the on-line nature of our books provides an invaluable experience. In particular, the links to locations within and outside chapters, the on-line quizzing system, and the ability to search for key words and phrases are features that can only be experienced "on-line." Furthermore, the printouts make references to web sites, and many end of chapter problems require the student to browse through sites listed at the end of every chapter. Obviously, these references are meaningless in a stand alone hard copy.

7. Are instructors responsible for ensuring that students don't share accounts?

No. We simply require that the instructor adopt the quizzing system and that the online quizzes should be incorporated into the course grading scheme. This will ensure that each student obtains an account. We do NOT require class lists or any "policing" on the part of the instructor, beyond adoption of the quizzing system.

8. Exactly how does the quizzing system work and can the instructor get grade reports on the Web?

In the index to the book, students click on the "take a chapter quiz" option and select a chapter. The student is then shown five questions drawn at random from the database of questions for that chapter. The student then selects answers (all questions are multiple-choice) and submits the answers. The system instantly shows the student how he/she did on the quiz. Instructors can retrieve "real-time" grade reports from any Web browser. These grade reports show the date/time when the student took the quiz, how long it took the student to submit answers to the quiz, and the student's grade. More detailed reports showing the specific questions taken by each student, and answers to quiz questions, can also be called up by instructors on a Web browser. In our pilot tests, students have found the on-line quizzing system an excellent motivation for reading the chapter and staying caught up with the material. Students have also reported that the quizzes are good preparation for the tests. Instructors have indicated that their students come better prepared to class. In addition, the quizzes are automatically graded, relieving the instructor of that burden. Although the quizzes are "open book," our pilot tests have revealed that not all students get perfect scores on the quizzes!

9. What resources are available for instructors?

In the "instructors only" section, the following options are currently available: (1) an on-line solutions manual for the AIS book, (2) a system for viewing ALL quiz questions for each chapter, either with or without answers (each student sees only 5 questions pulled at random from the test bank for a chapter), (3) a method for posting selected solutions to end of chapter problems so that an instructor's students can view those solutions on the CyberText web site, and (4) sample tests with solutions.

10. How often are the Web-based books updated?

It is our goal to keep our books as up to date as possible. The books will undergo updates prior to every semester. That is, updates will occur in late December/early January (prior to the Spring semester), in May (prior to the summer term), and in the middle of August (prior to the Fall semester). In addition, it is possible that minor updates may occur during a semester, especially to reflect recent technological developments. We also plan to update the end of chapter problems on a frequent basis.

11. Will other offerings be added to the current listing of Web-based books?

At present, we offer three AIS related Web-based books. We will eventually add other Web-based books, but not in the immediate future. Not all books are appropriate for Web delivery. If you have an idea for an accounting or business textbook, e-mail us at info@cybertext.com. We can then keep you posted about our plans for adding other books to our list of offerings.
