Data Visualization: Graphing Performance Indicators

This introduction to technology and Big Data case can be used in any business course. The case contains approximately 5,000 rows of sales data including: Sales Order Number, Salesperson Number, Salesperson Name, Salesperson Title, Region, State, Product Sold, Number of Units Sold, and Sales in Dollars. Students are required to find and replace input errors before the Excel data file is connected to Tableau. Each case requires the creation, in a randomized order, of a Pie Graph, Map Graph, a Multi-level Bar Graph and a Horizontal or Vertical Bar Graph. The graphs created are automatically graded using our proprietary technology when students upload their Tableau files to our server. Based on the visualizations, students are required to answer a series of analytic questions. The numbers are unique to each student, so that the correct answers to the analytic questions will be different and unique for every student.

The book comes with a quizzing system, with each student being presented with a timed quiz comprising five questions selected at random from the database of quiz questions for the chapter. Instructors can assign these quizzes in advance of the topics to be covered in class, giving students an incentive to read the chapter in advance of the class. Students read the chapters and take the online quizzes prior to class.

Each chapter features hyperlinks to related information, taking advantage of the online nature of the book. Additionally, the chapters featuring Microsoft Access databases permit the databases to be downloaded by students for further exploration.
